WELCOME TO MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY
OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT
You make a difference!
Each year, we invite our alumnae, parents, and friends
to share in the mission of Mount St. Mary Academy through
their generosity as well as their continued involvement
in our Mercy community. And we are eternally grateful
for the support we receive. It is through this support
that we are able to keep the vision of the first Sisters
of Mercy alive and provide our students an outstanding
Catholic, college preparatory education.
Many giving opportunities exist at Mount St. Mary Academy
offering a variety of ways to join with us in continuing
the work of Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the
Religious Sisters of Mercy. Your support allows us
to continue our efforts to prepare our students - and
the campus - for many decades to come!

THE
2007- 2008 “HABIT OF GIVING”
What is the Annual Fund?
The “Habit of Giving,” or
Annual Fund, is the cornerstone of giving to Mount
St. Mary Academy. It is called the Annual Fund because
the fund needs to be renewed and replenished each year.
As with most private schools, tuition does not cover
the full cost of educating our students. Each year
the Annual Fund is an indispensable part of the school's
operating budget, enabling the school to fulfill its
commitment to faculty salaries and tuition assistance.
This support from those closest to MSM is a valuable
endorsement of the school's mission. Supporting the
annual fund allows Mount St. Mary to maintain our standard
of excellence. A contribution to the Annual Fund benefits every student
at MSM every day.
During 2006-2007, your gifts enabled Mount St. Mary
to reach its Annual Fund goal. This told us that supporters understood,
better than ever, just how essential the Annual Fund
is in guaranteeing tuition assistance for students
who need it, and enabling us to continue providing
excellence in Mercy education. Our goal for 2007-2008
is $325,000.
This year begins our 157th year
of educating young women we must make every effort
to keep our salaries competitive with area private
schools and to continue to offer financial assistance
to deserving students.
Mount St. Mary is grateful to the Sisters of Mercy
who have given a significant donation to begin this
fund. We ask our alumnae, parents and friends to do
their part to match the continued commitment and sacrifices
of the Sisters of Mercy.
Levels of Annual Giving:
Since the founding of Mount St. Mary Academy in 1851,
our annual donors have played a significant role in
bringing the Mount to her present level of excellence.
We appreciate their dedication to Mount St. Mary, and
for sharing in the tradition and vision of our ministry.
Their annual support allows us to continue our efforts
to prepare our students—and the campus—far
into the future. We take this opportunity to offer
our gratitude to all of our Annual Fund donors for
your thoughtful generosity and to recognize your spirit
of commitment to Mount St. Mary Academy.

Memorial and Honor Gifts
Family and friends can choose Mount St. Mary when making
gifts to honor anniversaries, birthdays, weddings and
other milestones or in memory of a loved one. All gifts

Mount St. Mary Belle Walk
The
Belle Walk, installed in the sidewalks surrounding
the buildings on the MSM campus, is constructed of
solid granite bricks permanently etched with the name
or phrase of the donor’s choice. Additions to
the walk are installed annually. When you add your
name, or the name of a loved one to the Belle Walk,
you'll not only be preserving a bit of the history
of Mount St. Mary Academy, you will also be ensuring
her future. A brick in the Belle Walk is a wonderful
way to commemorate a special event — a birth,
graduation, or marriage — or to honor someone
who has made an impact on your life.
Matching Gifts
Double your dollars to Mount St. Mary Academy through
your employer's matching gift program. Check with your
employer today and ask if they will match your charitable
gift. Gifts-In-Kind
Businesses and individuals can give gifts of equipment,
inventory, materials and services. Not only do you
support education but you can receive tax deductions
as well. Mount St. Mary has a Wish List that may include
a piece of technology equipment, furniture or other
item you no longer need.
Charitable Bequest and Other Planned Giving
Remembering Mount St. Mary Academy in your will is
one way to establish a lasting legacy for the young
women who will build tomorrow. At the same time you
can save estate tax dollars that might otherwise consume
these assets. Bequests, charitable trusts and life
insurance are examples of types of planned gifts you
can make to Mount St. Mary Academy.
Planned gifts afford the donor the opportunity to make
a substantial future gift to MSM by giving from your
assets rather than from your income. Donors have the
satisfaction of knowing that their contributions will
have a significant impact on the ministry of Mount
St. Mary Academy and that the students will benefit
directly from their generosity far into the future.
Establishment of a planned gift entitles you to membership
in the 1851 Society at Mount St.
Mary Academy.
Many planned giving options exist. We strongly recommend
that you discuss these options with your attorney or
financial advisor to determine the method which best
fits your needs. For more information on any of these
opportunities, please contact , director of development at 501-664-8006
ext. 320.
1851 SOCIETY
Our Past Ensures Our Future

In 2001, Mount St. Mary Academy established the 1851
Society to recognize and thank those who have included
Mount St. Mary in some way in their estate planning—through
wills/bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance,
retirement plans, or other planned giving vehicles.
The name of the society commemorates the year that
Mount St. Mary’s was founded by the Religious
Sisters of Mercy from Ireland. Planned gifts ensure
that Mount St. Mary Academy will have the funds necessary
to continue her mission and ministry far into the future.
If you would like more information about becoming an
1851 Society member, please contact Carolyn McCone,
CFRE, director of development at 501-664-8328 ext.

ESTABLISHING A NAMED ENDOWMENT
OR SCHOLARSHIP FUND
While the Annual Fund might be thought of as the "checking
account" for day-to-day operations, the McAuley Endowment
Fund would be the "savings account". This fund ensures
that Mount St. Mary Academy has a permanent source
of operating revenue. Gifts are made to the principal
and only the interest is applied to expenses. Gifts
to the endowment allow MSM to:
• offer more competitive salaries and benefits
• increase professional development opportunities
for faculty/staff
• renovate and preserve existing facilities
• provide more need-based scholarships
• provide more merit-based scholarships
• provide for technology maintenance and upgrades
Donors may establish named endowed funds for particular
areas of interest at Mount St. Mary. A named
endowment fund may be established in memory
or honor of a particular person or persons. The principal
will remain untouched and the interest will be used
as designated (i.e. scholarships, athletics, or general
support).
To establish a named endowment or scholarship fund,
the donor or family must make a commitment of at least
$5,000. This may be paid at the time the fund is established
or over a multi-year period of up to five years.
Donors may contribute to MSM's Tuition Assistance Fund
and/or any of the existing named scholarships. Donors
also have the opportunity to establish a named scholarship,
either need-based or merit-based, as a living tribute
or in memoriam of a loved one.

LASTING EFFORTS CAPITAL
CAMPAIGN
The Lasting Efforts Campaign was initiated in October
2002, guided by a firm commitment to the Mount St.
Mary Academy mission and the educational excellence
achieved by our school. This campaign will be conducted
over a period of 10 years and when completed, will
have raised funds for endowments to take the pressure
off of tuition, and for renovation of the existing
'53 and '77 buildings and the McAuley Center, as well
as other needs.
Endowment
Endowments included in this campaign occupy an important
place, as their development relieves the burden on
tuition as the primary source of revenue for the school.
These endowments will address five key areas: faculty,
facilities, programs, technology and scholarships.
Currently, tuition revenue covers only the expense
of faculty salaries and benefits (75% of our operating
budget); conventional fund-raising must cover the remaining
25% of Mount’s expenses. The annual flow of a
percentage of the endowment earnings into the annual
operating budget will allow necessary expenditures
to be funded and at the same time, enhance programs.
MSM Campus Master Plan
The Lasting Efforts Campaign seeks to further enrich
the quality of campus life and community at Mount St.
Mary Academy by continuing to improve the campus. Since
1953, with the first addition to the school complex,
and 1977, with the second, MSM has served countless
students and visitors. However, decades later, comprehensive
renovation is required of these two buildings, as well
as the 1927 gymnasium. The renovation of the McAuley Center Gymnasium was completed in January 2006, following an extensive 10-month process. Improvements include new heating/cooling and electrical systems, refurbished locker rooms, window restoration, a new main entrance and redesigns of both the stage/concession area and the original front lobby area. In addition to the locker rooms, the basement area now houses the Sr. Philippa, RSM Fitness Center, a multipurpose space, coaches' offices and a dressing area.
The McAuley Center Gymnasium was constructed in 1929, just 20 years after the school relocated from downtown Little Rock to Hillcrest. It is the only building that remains from the school's original construction. It was designed by Charles L. Thompson, a prominent local architect in the late 1880s and early 1930s.
Mount St. Mary is a school that draws from a history
rich with tradition – tradition grounded in Mercy
Values. The calling Catherine McAuley felt to offer
an excellent, holistic education to young women is
still very fresh in our hearts. Our future holds more
promise than our past ever dreamed. It is our prayer
that you will join with us in this challenge and become
part of an enduring Mission that will carry Mount St.
Mary into a bright and exciting future.
Monies toward Lasting Efforts will be raised through
a combination of outright gifts, planned gifts and
grants. We are challenged by the size of this task;
however, when we consider the historical generosity
of our alumnae, friends and parents, both past and
present, we feel confident that we will reach our campaign
goals to outfit MSM for her next 157 years!
